LOS ANGELES – Last week’s Summer Game Fest was mostly virtual, full of trailers for video games that may or may not run in the next 18 months. However, as the gaming industry approaches the normal preview mode, we received invitations to two events in early June with games coming soon.

You may have already seen my highlights from those events: Street Fighter 6which is fantastic, and Sonic Frontierswhich is strange but promising. This article summarizes the “best of the rest” based on practice tests at the Summer Game Fest Play Days in Los Angeles and a series of remote-connected Tribeca Games Festival demo models. The event was attended by some of the world’s largest developers and publishers – perhaps because many of their games have been postponed to 2023. Although this list is more inclined to indie, we stand behind these highlights of the preview, thanks to how they felt during the game.

Cuphead: Delicious last course

Platforms: PC, Xbox, PS4, switch
Scheduled release: June 30

Hellish cruelty Cuphead will return later this month as a $ 7.99 DLC package. If the pattern of the level of the boss that I played suggests that this DLC will be a great place for fans of the series, not turn Cuphead formula upside down.

Ms. Challis ’new game character is available as a“ charm ”that one player can equip at any time, and she has several beginner-friendly bonuses, including an extra health score, a double jump, a parry that doubles as a jerk forward, and a somersault that adds a few frames of invincibility. Her new abilities weren’t necessarily required in the battle with the new boss I played, though due to the fact that she was horrible in CupheadI was still struggling with three phases of combat that involved a sharp transition to a floating, rotating platform (think The world is super Mariosecond battle with Reznor).

It is available in the new company, which executive producer Maria Moldenhauer says Ars is comparable to the third island of the original game, which included seven bosses and two platform levels. Moldenhower says the DLC will have six bosses, which she says are more complicated and challenging than the choices in a standard game, but she would not specify what else will contain the DLC.

Moldenhauer also says the DLC includes almost as many hand-drawn backgrounds and animation frames as the entire standard Cuphead companies. This could mean that battles with bosses I haven’t played in yet are even more intense or that there’s another big platformer problem ahead. Either way, $ 7.99 seems a must-have DLC option for those who have already invested Cuphead‘s carefully drawn 2D action.

F1 2022

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4
Scheduled release: June 28
Links: Epic | PSN | Xbox | Official site

EA and Codemasters posted F1 2022 Demonstration of gameplay to show the latest feature of the series: VR Racing. Codemasters producers on the spot have confirmed that the studio’s combined think tank is mature enough to add VR mode to F1thanks to the input of those who have worked on VR’s modes DiRT Rally and Driveclub VR. (Evolution Studios did the last one before Codemasters acquired it in 2016).

Kiosk game makers have merged Kiosk Fanatec CSL DD F1 package with Quest 2 VR headset. Great news: the result is the right balance between accuracy and performance, as well as opinions about the comfort of VR while navigating F1– worth it right away. The only exception to the comfort were the moments when particle-filled clouds filled my game view, causing the frame rate of my headset to drop. This problem usually arose after I turned off all driving aids; if I relied on the additional game mode F1-for-dummies, all-assist mode, F1 2022 felt like a fantastic carnival ride.

Codemasters had nothing else to boast about F1 2022 in SGF, but the management was interesting enough to captivate me when I play VR mode on my PC when it launches on June 28th.

Animal Well

Platforms: PS5, PC
Scheduled release: Beginning of 2023
Links: Steam | PSN | Official site

At some point, the oversaturation of indie games “looking for adventure” (better known as “Metroidwaniya”) should end, right? What can anyone else do to win among recognized critics Hollow knight, The edge of the axiomand Cave history?

Until I was convinced of this Animal Well surpass other greats of the genre, my watch demo intrigued me very, very much. First, he has new beautiful ideas for pixel art visualization, thanks to his only designer, programmer and artist who creates the game engine from scratch – and has reduced the full package to 10 MB. The lighting and physics models in the game are some of the most impressive I’ve ever seen in 16-bit aesthetics, and may even surpass pixel madness with a chemical reaction Noita.

Also, this adventure has clever ideas on how to completely miss a fight. Animal Well asks players to focus on challenging maneuvers, solving puzzles and discovering hidden paths while they unravel the mysteries that hide the lack of dialogue. Instead of owning a weapon, your eight-pixel hero should make the most of items such as firecrackers that create light effects on the 2D world, scaring away potential enemies, and a handy whip that can be thrown into slits to capture otherwise untouchables elements of the world.

Fast controls and otherworldly pixel designs made my demo version Animal Well memorable so far, and I’m looking forward to its final release (currently tied to the dim window of “early 2023”).
