Tesla has filed a patent for “fibrous foam architecture” claiming that chair-making techniques and interior decoration will create a more efficient and environmentally friendly process.

The patent filed describes the materials used to accommodate traditional vehicle seats including foam made of polyurethane, a non-recyclable material and may not be the most comfortable due to lack of air circulation.

Foaming is also a time-consuming and laborious process that involves pouring and mixing various chemicals, such as polymers or epoxy, into the mold. Once completed, this requires additional materials to be trimmed and molded, creating unnecessary waste that is expected to be eliminated by Tesla’s fibrous architecture.

The patent background states, “The installation of trim to the foam may include pig rings, hooks and loops, and/or cutting methods. In such methods, alignment tolerances may need to be maintained, mating surface boundaries may need to be met, trenches and seams may need to be provided, etc.

Storage and handling of glue applications may also be required. The current manufacturing process may require labor and is time-consuming. “This will improve the production and quality of backups, armrests, footrests, and rollers.

Tesla wants to improve the interior of its vehicles, stating “there is a need for better foam architecture and related manufacturing processes that can overcome those shortcomings.”

A better foam structure for vehicle seats will provide new materials that are more comfortable and recyclable for Tesla electric car owners. Tesla plans to use a stack of several different layers of material to make the seat selection less tiring and more economical.
