Tesla Model S Ultra Bright LED Interior Lighting Review
Tesla Model S Ultra Bright LED Interior Lighting Review
Tesla Model S and X Ultra-Bright DIY LED Indoor Lighting Kit. The Model S has indoor lighting in most right places – puddles under doors, footwells, trunk lighting, and trash – but the problem lies in its inability to provide usable light. This is especially true in luggage areas where it is almost impossible to see your belongings in the dark of night.
Looking for ultra-bright LEDs on model x? See our review here.
My DIY skills are mainly centered on anything that has a keyboard and monitor. Anything outside of that is nonsense. My wife measures my success by calculating how many parts I break while working on a project, which may include body parts. There is a “1 finger job” (1 broken finger) for projects involving leg injuries. I am not very useful, although I have to say that my Blackvue dashcam project came out pretty well.
This LED interior light kit is simple enough to make it the perfect Tesla Model S DIY project for me.
Abstract Ocean, famous for its “Fobpocket” key chain, also sells very bright LED interior lights for Models S and X. These lamp assemblies replace OEM Tesla lamps and are sold in sets of 1, 4, 8, and 13. For $ 12, 99 per bulb ($ 11.50 at Amazon Prime), this is certainly not the cheapest, but again I do not have a reference frame for the price of Ultra-Bright LED installation.
Before you order a lamp, check how much you need. This depends on the age of your Model S and whether you have a premium indoor lighting package or not. The red dots in the picture below (belonging to the Ocean Abstract) indicate possible locations for Tesla interior lighting:
In some cases, even if you do not have a premium interior lighting package and lack some lighting, you may be able to add additional lighting by following the excellent installation instructions outlined on the Abstract Ocean website. On my Model S, I have a factory premium interior lighting pack that has 13 units of lamps.
Each lamp is a direct replacement for the factory lamp on your Model S, not to mention 16x brighter. Abstract Ocean says this about brightness:
Keep in mind that light perception is not on a linear scale, so even though it is technically 16x brighter, the perceived reality will be smaller than that, as most interior surfaces tend to absorb light. Yet, in reality, it makes a dramatic difference with the lighting in the Model S.
In addition to the lights, there is another item you want to have and that is a spudger tool that will help you carry the factory lamp installation.
Ultra-Bright Trunk LED Light
Ocean Abstract installation instructions divide the assembly into 5 parts to increase the difficulty level. I lacked one bulb so I only did 4 parts but did not exceed my mediocre level of skill. The first part of this instruction guides you through the process of installing a trunk lamp. This is a great place to start because the lights in this location are the most accessible, and serve as a good training ground. This is where you will get used to removing the equipment using the tip of the spudger.
Stem lights are easier to remove because they are pushed to the soft layer of the shaft and less hidden in the hard plastic. I find that getting into the luggage makes for better access to the lights.
To remove the lamp, you remove it from one side (try the other part if one side looks too hard) and then slowly remove the lamp unit. Each lamp has a wire that can be clicked and locked on the lamp. Press the latch and pull the cord. Replace factory lights with new LED units.
Once installed, you will notice drastic lighting differences.
Turn on the Frunk light
The front of the trunk (frunk) only has one internal light right in front of the frunk making it a little harder to access just because of the angle of position of your body when facing the car. But when you insert the spudger, removing the light is quite easy.
Also, I noticed that the inside of my trunk became very dusty/dirty from time to time even though I rarely opened it. I guess it doesn’t stick well from the elements. I never realized that the inside was wet, but there was a collection of dust and dirt that I did not expect. I keep the extension cord/adapter in it so it doesn’t become a major problem but if you keep groceries or something else in there, you may want to keep an eye on it and may ask Tesla if it is properly attached.
After all, it is an Ultra-Bright LED light mounted on a frunk.
Installing the puddle light
At the bottom of each of the four doors is what Tesla calls a “puddle light” that helps illuminate/sink the area where you enter and exit your vehicle. These puddle lights are equipped with enhanced Model S premium interior lighting.
Turning off these lights is easy, but again difficult to do because it is installed upside down under each door. I found that lying on the floor was the best way to gain access. Having a blanket, towel, or garage floor that is clean and comfortable to lie on will help.
Installing the footwell
Difficulty level 4 (still quite modest) is to raise the legs well. Again, this is about gaining access and improving your attack angle. Front passenger footlight right above the area where the passenger’s foot is located. I feel difficult just because I have a right hand and light on the left. The solution is to lie on the floor mat and look at the light.
The driver’s side well light is easier because it’s on my right, but the trick is to maneuver around the pedals. The lights are right above the accelerator pedal so you should reach a considerable distance. Get creative with your angle and you will be able to illuminate easily.
It turns out that the light of the front footwell is heating for the Boss part on the 4th floor – the light of the back footwell. This lamp is attached to the seat flanking the horizontal bar located below the front seat. To access it, you want to completely lift the back of the front seat (but not push it forward).
This is followed by pulling each side of the light bracket towards you carefully until it is released from the blade. Disconnect the cable and separate the lamp from the plastic handle.
Removing a lamp from a plastic handle without breaking requires a bit of skill, but if I can do it, you can too. My advice is to insert the tip of the spudger in and then turn it slightly so that the edge of the light is out enough for you to take and lower. Know that it is quite easy to damage the plastic handle. Abstract Ocean sells parts that seem to also be able to be used to add rear foot lighting to the Model S without a premium indoor lighting package. Once you turn off the lights, inserting a new one is easy. Replace the cable and press the clip back into the bar.
Puddles and footwells together make a big difference.
Wear lightbox gloves
I only have 12 bulbs so I don’t get to the 5th floor. The instructions make it sound a little harder than the others due to the tight space and limited access, but I think it won’t be difficult if you play around with your point of view.
It is a direct replacement for stock Tesla lamps and looks the same regardless of its brightness.
You have an amazing EV but when you open the door, the standard lights have no brightness at all (you may not realize that you have a dim light!)
This LED enhancement is unique to IT Shields and is not for sale elsewhere.
Customers have even seen the Brighter Ocean Abstract LEDs next to us and commented that we are not only brighter but also have much better light scattering compared to direct rays as they come from Abstract Ocean.
This is a genuine Tesla home and is a direct replacement for your existing Tesla LED.
