The latest vehicle, although all-new from the tires up, is unmistakably a Mustang, embracing design features, silhouette, and ethos from iconic predecessors for 40 years. The car comes in two body styles, a coupe and a sedan, true to nature.
In the Deluxe and Luxury trim tiers, there are two series, the six-cylinder base model and the V-8-powered GT, each offered. Although the true magic lies in the GT, the car is consistently outsold by the more economical base car. With special-edition “Bullitt” and Mach 1 models looming on the horizon, improvements are slight for 2006.
With its long-hood/short-deck configuration, 1967-inspired front clip, galloping-horse badge,’ 60s-style side scoops, and three-element taillamps, there’s no mistaking the Mustang for any other vehicle. The car has an offensive posture, made tougher than the previous models by wheels driven to the corners in a six-inch wheelbase rise.
The GT has a little more external eye candy, but base car buyers who check the proper option boxes can get several of the same items—and they can also get one that the GT doesn’t offer: a stripe with “Mustang” written out in it around the lower body, much as on the cars of the 1960s.
Like the exterior, with its long, thin numerals, the Mustang’s interior has touches of neo-1960s styling, particularly the angular, twin-cove dashboard, the big, three-speak steering wheel, and the chrome-trimmed gauges. But the cabin still has contemporary features, with plenty of brushed metal trim available.
Overall, the interior is sleek, but stiff, cheap-feeling plastic is abundant. The available instrument-panel lighting, which can be changed from the standard green to any of an entire rainbow of colors, is one special aspect.
This is not a life-altering breakthrough, although uncommon, and it does not change the center-stack lighting tone. The multi-color lighting is part of the Interior Enhancement Kit, along with much of the colorful metal trim.
Despite the buckets that look transported from the Lyndon Johnson era, the current car has a decent driving position and genuinely spacious front seats, unlike previous Mustangs. However, the modestly upgraded two-person backseat hews to the Mustang tradition by being very crowded and difficult to get to; it is only ideal for kids or short journeys. To carry more cargo, at least the rear seatbacks fold down—good news, since the trunk is physically narrower than the 13.1-cubic-foot classification suggests.
An all-new unibody architecture that is better able to consume and channel energy than the ’04 model is the biggest safety story here. Protection characteristics are very restricted, with the option of anti-lock braking and all-speed traction control on V-6 vehicles, standard on GT models.
On all Mustangs, front-seat side-mounted airbags are optional. All these characteristics are worth considering, particularly for cars that are likely to encourage performance-oriented driving. Stability control, considering the tendency of the live-axle rear suspension and eight-cylinder strength to trigger oversteer, would have been a welcome feature.
In the storm, judicious throttle application is needed without this extra safety. With five stars for the driver and passenger front collision test, four stars for side effect, and five stars for rollover, the new Mustang has received high scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ford is launching the first all-electric SUV, marking the beginning of an explosion of battery-powered cars from conventional and luxury car manufacturers over the next two years that experts in the industry claim would fuel sales of electric vehicles.

Yet car producers see growth potential, and concerns about running out of juice on a daily commute are gone as electric cars get 250 miles or more on a single charge. LMC estimates that they will make up 17 percent of global revenue and 7 percent of U.S. sales in 2030 because of the added models and expanded variety.
Electric cars of the first generation, which were mostly retrofitted versions of current models modified to meet government fuel efficiency requirements, did not sell well primarily because they were unable to drive more than 100 miles between charges. But now, with lots of cushions, many will travel over the distance that people drive in one day.
