What characteristics to take?

1. For indoors or outdoors?
The location of the surveillance camera is the first important criterion to take into account. Manufacturers offer models intended for indoors or specially designed for the outdoors. Features and expectations will be different.
2. Wired or wireless?
The question will arise when choosing between a wired model with Ethernet port or Wi-Fi. Some models offer both solutions, which is necessarily a more significant. There will also be a question of wire for food. If most models opt for an AC adapter, it is possible to find cameras with a rechargeable battery.
3. What definition / image quality?
IP cameras have long been content with a standard definition (SD). There are now more and more models capable of delivering a stream (or recording) in HD (720p), Full HD (1080p) or 4K Ultra HD. 5. Local or cloud storage?
Surveillance cameras can have a microSD port that will record their video streams or offer a backup offer in the cloud. While the first is not the most secure – the device can be stolen -, opting for a cloud backup offer can result in additional costs (there are free offers via the cloud). Some manufacturers also offer backups to a NAS or FTP server.
6. The application
For remote monitoring or receiving alerts, the cameras are most often accompanied by a mobile application. Some may stand out in terms of the features offered and the ease of use.
7. The consumption
Here is something to keep in mind if you have to use a surveillance camera all year round. A camera with measured electrical consumption will prevent your electricity bill from skyrocketing.
As a reminder, an individual can install cameras in their home to ensure security. The CNIL specifies that these devices are not subject to the rules for the protection of personal data or to those of the internal security code. However, they must respect the privacy of neighbors, visitors and passers-by.
8. For apartment / house
For your house or apartment, you will prefer a discreet camera equipped with a rotating head. Dome cameras can be particularly attractive by integrating more easily into your interior. The latter can also carry a fisheye lens which will allow you to enjoy a 180° view.
Good image quality is to be preferred, day and night. We will therefore ensure that the camera offers an infrared lighting system that is powerful enough to offer quality images after dark. Regarding power, a battery-operated camera can be seen as an easy solution. However, they are more expensive and will require regular recharging. If the location allows, we may prefer a model to plug into the mains, more affordable and which allows uncompromising use (image quality, alerts, etc.).
Another advantage for an indoor camera is the presence of a facial recognition feature. An appreciable function to take advantage of a smart camera and receive adapted alerts. For storage, we will favor a solution in the cloud that provides more flexibility. Depending on the manufacturer, a paid subscription may be required to take advantage of all the features (definition of videos and images, alert system, etc.).
In terms of accessories, we can for example associate the camera with door opening detectors. Among the market references, there is the 360° Indoor Camera from Bosch which, as its name suggests, offers 360° detection. At Nest (Google), we will use the Nest Cam IQ indoor or the Nest Cam Indoor. Users who need multiple cameras will be able to turn to Arlo kits from Netgear. At Logitech, we can note the presence in the catalog of the Circle 2, a camera offered in wired or wireless version. The latter can be versatile thanks to its many accessories.
Avoid nocturnal burglaries
We will get closer here to the technologies and features offered by indoor cameras. However, care should be taken to choose a model with excellent infrared image quality. We will also opt for a camera equipped with a good microphone, a correct speaker and a powerful alarm of at least 90 decibels and more than 100 for the best models.
Monitor your door
To monitor the entrance, the model may vary depending on whether you live in a house (outdoor camera) or an apartment (indoor camera). Anyway, we will opt for a deterrent and wireless model that can be connected to an intercom or a doorbell. A fixed camera will do the trick, but care should be taken to choose a model equipped with intelligent face detection.
Attention, precautions must be taken during the installation of the device. For example, the CNIL indicates that the images are only consulted in the event of an incident (vandalism, degradation, aggression, etc.) and should not be used to “monitor” in real time the comings and goings of residents or visitors. The manufacturer Yi Technology will be able to stand out with its affordable models for indoors or outdoors.
Also note that some manufacturers offer connected doorbells, sometimes compatible with a connected lock too. While most are suitable for individual houses, such as the Ring or Netatmo models since they replace a traditional chime, others can be placed on a standard door. The Ring Door View Cam connected peephole replaces a traditional eye cup and includes a Full HD camera. All the doorbells are equipped with it and can therefore be used as a surveillance camera.
If you have a garden
For the garden, we switch to an outdoor camera which will have specific characteristics. Thus, it will be necessary here to opt for a robust model and capable of withstanding difficult conditions. There are notably IP66 certified cameras resistant to dust and water jets which will naturally find their place outdoors. Generally, these models are more imposing (tube cameras) and are offered with a suitable fixing system. We will also choose a deterrent model, motorized and offering good image quality. The visual field may also be important, as can night vision. Here it will be necessary to move towards a model designed for the exterior like the Nest Cam IQ exterior of Google or the Netgear Arlo Pro 2.
Synology DiskStation DS218+ Review. At last. After considering the money for a NAS for a long time, I have never looked back. I went straight to the Plus model to be prepared for the future. I also directly upgraded to a total of 10GB RAM.
However, this could be even quieter. For me, the NAS is under the TV in the living room in a TV cabinet with back wall. The very quiet fan noise is thrown back through the open cabinet. Possibly. I am considering using a silent adapter. However, you can only hear the NAS when there are no other noises in the room. So justifiable with the cinema sound!
I bought the NAS primarily for backing up my pictures, after 2 external HDDs were smoked. I also have a WD MyBook Live with 3TB. Without RAID, this is too unsafe for me in the long term. The MyBook Live is also extremely slow.
Synology DS218+ Speed:
When I put the NAS into operation, I experienced a real speed frenzy. I operate the NAS in the WLAN AC network and have transfer rates of up to 65MB / s. With the MyBook, I manage 9 MB / s, if at all.
The speed is even sufficient to process RAW files in Lightroom. Of course, don’t expect SSD performance, but um, it works.
Synology DS218+ Media server:
In addition to photos, I have also found using the NAS as a media server. Here I found the variant RasPlex on a Raspberry Pi for me as the best and most fluid solution. The Plex server runs on the NAS and the RasPlex client on the Pi. Connected in the network over 1000 line. Everything is supported by DTS sound, mkv containers, H265 codecs etc.
Tried the internal VideoStation, which failed due to DTS. An installation of ffmpeg was not really successful either, so a crutch again. Then try everything with the fireTV stick with Plex. But here no AC3 support etc and then the connection goes straight to the knees at 1080p and high bit rate. Even Kodi on the TVstick was not a satisfactory success. In summary: If you like good quality, fast performance and good sound, then you can’t avoid a wired system mMn. The integration of the RasberryPi also prompted me to set up a DIY Ambilight with HyperCon. And that’s right now.
Synology DS218+ Software
But continue to NAS. The apps are also very successful. Be it the DS Photo or Audio App. The DS Photo App is very fast with external access and large photos can be quickly presented to colleagues and the family. I have also integrated them into my iPhone so that the cell phone photos are automatically uploaded to the NAS.
The better half of me can also access the music from your cell phone and collect and listen to your audio books.
I know that all of these services can also be implemented with other apps and platforms, but these entire stand-alone solutions are always just crutches for me. Here photos on flickr, data on Dropbox or Onedrive and music about the stressful and for me still the most complicated program iTunes. (and God knows, I have enough experience in the area of technical stuff)
In addition, it is precisely this possibility for me to be master of and over his data, which is also a positive side effect.
Synology DS218+ Setup
The Synology DiskStation DS218+ setting options are also very diverse. The time-controlled switching off, switching on, wake on lan, or the banal “switch off the LEDs” at 8:00 p.m. so that I can watch films undisturbed is great.
In summary: real enthusiasm and worth every penny. Finally no further crutch in the house, but an egg-laying wool milk sow. I completely forget that I actually wanted to use the NAS primarily for archiving photos. Because of all the possibilities, 4TB may be too little for me at some point 😉
Synology DS218+ Installation
Before I had connected a hard drive to my router, which simply took too long due to the access times. Well, and then came interim solutions such as hard drives connected to a PC and keeping the data the same on the laptop using synchronization software. Oh dear, how much time and nerves did it take?
Well, as I said, five years ago looking for the NAS, which was and is the right choice for the future. After a lot of research, I came across Synology again and again, which is also a little bit the Mercedes among NAS systems. In retrospect, it turned out to be justified.
Since I did not want to “spend” so much, I decided on the DS213j and equipped it with 2x WD 3TB (Red). Honestly what a very good decision, as a beginner. Nevertheless, I would recommend everyone to buy a DS218, DS218 play or if then even DS218 +.
The total price is so cheap because of two hard drives for a RAID 1, and the price difference between a J model and a higher variant is “not” that much more. The DS213j has done its job well all the time. Due to 512 MB RAM, not too high-performance CPU and some apps on it, it eventually reached its performance limits. Access from the Internet to the DSM was really nerve-wracking.
So the DS218 + came into play. Access via DSM is no longer a problem. Accessing files on the DS213j as well as video was no problem.
At this point, I don’t want to write about the DS218 + anymore, because to put it simply, with 2 GB RAM of a high-performance CPU and the use of apps that the DS213j was denied, this was the right choice.
The DS213j is still in operation, only with significantly fewer apps. I also removed media center, photo, video, music, etc. as a conversion and now leave everything to the DS218 +, which does it with flying colors.
Backups are transferred to external hard drives via USB3.0 on the DS218 +, which now hardly takes any waiting time. Under the DS213j that was a daily task (with the first backup, for example, with 200 GB). Of course, backups are also stored on local hard drives that are decentralized and not connected to the system. The DS213j now takes over DNS server, Survallance, a little file and file access to secure external media such as SmartPhones.
If you now compare the two, only the DS218 + can be considered for a purchase. Very simple rule, after the first two months you can see with a smaller model what you would like to do but maybe not, or with many restrictions. The delta of the devices is around 120 € additional costs, which are well invested if you want to have a NAS system.
